Yes, anxiety can cause one to startle and wake up when drifting off to sleep or simply relaxing. A primitive part of our brain senses danger by letting down our guard. Please see a clinical psychologist who can help you w/this and anxiety in general. Peace and good health.

A trigger for these events could well be sudden myoclonic jerks as you fall asleep. This can well make the anxiety far more intense. Other sleep disorder issues should be considered. Agree with need for emotional therapy, but would not disregard sleep issues as a co-morbidity here.
