Diverticulum is singular, diverticula plural. Diverticulosis is the condition of having colonic diverticula. It is diverticulitis when inflamed or infected. Fecaliths do not cause these conditions, but often are present. Whether or not surgery is needed depends on how well antibiotics work or continuing symptoms. If a gastroenterologist recommends surgery, probably it is necessary. Good luck.
