The : The recovery time will vary from person to person and doctor to doctor. Typically, you can expect a hospital stay of 2-4 days and recovery at home for a few weeks. The difference between laparoscopic and open surgery is more related to the length of the incision and amount of pain. I tell my patients, 3 days in the hospital, 2 weeks of soreness, 6 weeks before feeling normal.

In my experience: Hospital stays for open colectomy or laparoscopic colectomy for diverticular disease are identical, pain is idential, my incision is 1 cm at most longer on the open case and recovery time to full unrestricted activity is 6 weeks for both., operating time for me is much shorter with an open procedure. My patient leave on day 3 or 4 with a prescription for ibuprofen. Decide with your surgeon.

Recovery time varies: Recover time will vary depending on many factors including age, general health of the patient, infection control, smoker or not, blood sugar control, the exact type of procedure, and post-operative and follow up care. Discuss it with your surgeon and get their opinion as to what they feel is a reasonable recovery time for you.
