If standard treatment for allergic conjunctivitis and dry eye do nothing, the ophthalmologist can consider alternative diagnoses that can masquerade as allergy, such as adult inclusion conjunctivitis, which is common especially among bird fanciers. You can request transfer to a cornea service where a conjunctival scraping might reveal the true culprit. Red eye can be difficult to diagnose.
