A member asked:

Hi a periodontist saw i have more calculus than would be expected since my last gum cleaning 3 months ago. he said my cleaning could be done by my own dentist, but suggested a deep cleaning. what is involved with this? is there blood? a lot? pain?

IF YOUR SO WORRIED HAVE YOUR PERIODONTIST CLEAN YOUR TEETH. A DEEP CLEANING IS NO DIFFERENT THAN WHAT YOUR PERIODONTIST HAS BEEN DOING. BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT PRACTICING GOOD ORAL HYGIENE AND HAVE MORE CALCULUS THAN EXPECTED THAN HE FEELS LET YOUR OWN DENTIST CLEAN YOUR TEETH. IT WILL BE CHEAPER AND SAME INVOLVEMENT.

Deep cleaning is different from simple cleaning because simple cleaning does not need to numb the gums and is done to remove plaque and calculus from above the gum margin of teeth ,but deep cleaning is done under local anesthesia to remove deposited calculus from under gum margin of teeth. There may be discomfort and sensitive teeth after the procedure which disappears gradually..
