A member asked:

Ent: would you prescribe steroids (oral or intratympanic) for sudden worsening tinnitus 12 days ago with no hearing loss? saw an ent that recommended i observe and not treat. afraid it may come permanent. should i seek a second opinion?

Tinnitus itself is a difficult process to treat, and most often occurs in context of hearing loss in older folks. Can be a side effect of medications, recreational drugs, loud music--especially via head phones and rock concerts, and work related noise exposure. Not clear if steroids really ever help. Yes, get your second opinion, and consider evaluation for Meniere's?
