A member asked:

9 years ago, my daughter developed acute autoimmune hemolytic anemia, her hemoglobin dropped to 3.7. two transfusions, prednisone x 5 months, followed by a hematologist for nearly a year. is the covid vaccine safe for her to take?

Although mild elevations in immune response to the antigenic reaction to all three approved COVID vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna and J&J) are part of the vaccine effect, the inflammatory immune response to the COVID-19 virus is potentially much greater. Effects from the virus can cause extreme responses which can lead to severe clinical consequences. Best to get the vaccine when available.

The Covid vaccines are safe in more than 95% of cases. Consequently I would not deny the vaccine to this patient. Should anything untoward happen, medical treatments are available.

There is no contraindication for the covid vaccine for patients with splenectomy and Autoimmune hamolytic anemia. To be on the safe side I would advise Only Pfizer or moderna vaccines.
