Low WBC is usually caused by viral disease and it is transient. If you had normal white cell count in the past and it is now persistently low, you doctor has to do a lot of tests to find out the cause of low white blood cell which is called leukopenia in medical term. African American usually has leukopenia but it is usually above 3.5. Some medications can also cause leukopenia.
