D-dimer: Is a non-specific test used mostly in order to rule out clots. When increased, work up is needed not just to rule out blood clots, but other inflammatory conditions/ infections. Follow up is needed in the outpatient setting so that your doc can order proper tests and involve specialists as needed until a cause is found and properly addressed.
