Cant hurt to check: Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that can result in less hemoglobin and iron overload. Hemoglobin is vital for carrying oxygen in the bloodstream. Too much iron can cause problems. If your doctor is advising screening based on lab parameters, there is no reason to refuse testing. For many, the treatment involves dietary changes, in severe cases chelation or transfusions may be needed.
