Ask your dentist why: I can tell you many reasons why a patient may or may not need rct. However, you should ask the dentist who advised you have it to explain to you why he\she recommends you have it done.

Depth of "chip": If the chip is really a fracture that is into the dental pulp and bacteria have had time to infect the pulp tissue, a root canal is the likely recommendation. A small chip of enamel only, or a chip just into the dentin of the tooth, would rarely need a root canal unless there was excessive trauma to the tooth when the chip occurred and the pulp was damaged by the trauma.
