A member asked:

Can colonoscopy show acute diverticulitis and inflammation of the colon and is it done through biopsy or the dr can see it with the camera?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Visual examination: Diveticuli are usually recognizable on visual examination with colonoscopy. Inflammation is also generally recognizable visually. Diverticulitis may also produce abnormal laboratory tests reflecting inflammation. Inflammation of the colonic mucosa is also diagnosable visually but usually a biopsy is done for confirmation by a pathologist.
