Tonsillitis: Tonsillitis symptoms due to strep respond rather quickly to proper antibiotics, but when they are nonresponsive I suspect a viral cause or infectious mononucleosis. In mononucleosis the tonsils are usually swollen. Headache and neck soreness are nonspecific. Earache may be referred or may indicate middle ear infection. I recommend evaluation by ENT.
