My doctor wants to prescribe doxycycline 100mg taken twice a day for 7 days for acute maxillary bacterial sinusitis because the levaquin failed to help me. i've never taken doxycycline before. is it effective and will it treat sinusitis?

Reasonable choice: It usually isn't possible to know the exact bacteria involved in any particular case of bacterial sinusitis, and that's what determines which antibiotic(s) will work best. Therefore, it's pretty much a guessing game. Doxycycline is a reasonable choice after levofloxacin didn't work. However, it's possible no antibiotic will help; adequate drainage may be equally or more important.
