Sounds like: what you are describing is sinus tachycardia. There are many causes of this, but most are acute conditions, such as infection, dehydration, pulmonary embolism, undiagnosed heart attack, or chemical/drug exposure. Chronic causes include hyperthyroidism and pheochromocytoma. Consult with your doctor or a heart specialist to look into all of these possibilities.

Need more evaluation: There are many causes of fast heart beat. Most people are aware of exercise and fever, but anemia, dehydration, acute blood loss, anxiety, stress, cardiac problems, & overactive thyroid can also be causes. Some drugs will also be culprits: caffeine, stimulant medication like decongestants and asthma medication or some street drugs. Normal EKG is reassuring, but persistent tachycardia needs w/u.
