That's a tough one: Both ears or one? If this always happens something is preventing equalization of pressure behind your eardrum with the outside air pressure. There is a path from inner ear to throat that allows this and most can help open it by yawning or swallowing (if pain on descent hold nose and blow to increase pressure) No meds will solve this NSAIDS might help pain. See an ear nose & throat (ENT) specialist

Ear pain: This is usually due to the Eustachian tube pressure. You can take a decongestant before flying that may help Make sure you have a bottle of water or something to drink as when you swallow you can usually relieve this pressure. This is a technique used in diving to equalize the pressure in the ears. Good Luck
