Afrin (oxymetazoline): Try afrin (oxymetazoline) or try performing a valsalva maneuver - pinch your nose and gently "blow" air out of your nose while at the same time bearing down like you are lifting something. This will force air up your eustachian tube and expand the middle ear and prevent traction on the ear drum which is what causes the pain and fullness during descent.

When is it ok to pierce my baby's ears?

Dr. Scott J. Wolfson
Pediatrics 22 years experience
Yes: Although it is considered safe to have a baby's ears pierced i generally do not pierce infant ears. I usually wait until the child is old enough to ask for them. If your baby does have earrings i recommend taking them out at night (after the holes have healed) to reduce the risk of accidental swallowing/choking.

What can I do to relieve my baby's croup-related discomfort?

Dr. Evelyn Hurvitz
Pediatrics 37 years experience
Cool mist: The best thing for a child suffered from a croupy cough is to calm him down, and place him in front of cool mist. Croup is caused by a virus the induces inflammation and swelling of the upper airway. Cool mist calms the cough. Believe it or not, taking your child out into the cool night air and sitting quietly will often relieve the discomfort.

How do I clean my baby's ears?

Dr. Michael Pappas

Warm washcloth: Hello, babies are really a lot cleaner than we (adults) are. The only real dirty place on a baby is the diaper area. There is no real reason to clean the inside of your baby's ears. A warm washcloth to the outside will work just fine. Soft and gentle is the way to go. Try not to put water in the canal, as that can be irritating to the little ones.
