Not hip pain: Pain on the outside of the hip is not usually related to the hip joint. It is usually referred pain from the lower back or a bursitis of the trochanteric bursa.

Bursitis: Very likely 'Greater Trochanteric Bursitis' where the 'cushion' on the upper outside of your hip bone gets inflamed. Responds very well to a steroid injection. If it's very localized over the most prominent part without a history of trauma there seeing a Dr. who can give the injection can help!
