Be seen: Multiple potential causes, I would not hesitate to be seen for it. One of the more common causes is an inflammation of the iliotibial band, which runs from the lateral hip down to the knee; this is known as ITB syndrome. Those patients can't lay on that side and it can be quite painful. A simple exam would likely go a long way in making the diagnosis.
