Dry air: What you and your friend are experiencing is likely due to dry air in winter. Try using an emollient like Vaseline. It is not contagious.

Approximately 3 months ago, I noticed tiny bumps on the top of both my hands, but only in a patch. The skin will sometimes return almost to normal, but then will become red, dry looking, and itchy. Also have a somewhat similar patch on my calf now.
