Im a long term smoker. i had a low dose ct scan of the lungs that came back abnormal. some type of spot. they suggested another scan in 3 months. is this normal?

No: Any nodule is abnormal but did necessarily cancer. If the doctors suggested a repeat in 3 months, they likely suspected that cancer was unlikely. You could always obtain a second opinion.
