Chill the gums: Many parents find pacifiers they can freeze will chill the gums enough to provide relief. They buy several and rotate them as they warm up to body temperature. A small face cloth impregnated with ice chips offers them something similar to gnaw on. I don't encourage "pain" meds that might cover up a real fever from illness.

Cold teething toys: I don’t recommend any type of pharmaceuticals for teething. Cold teething toys that the baby can put in their mouth will soothe them!

Let him chew: Chewing on something cold and firm is helpful. One idea is to give them a damp washcloth that as been frozen in the freezer to chew on. Commercial teeth rings that can be frozen are available as well. Teething is a normal process. I would avoid medication like painkillers unless absolutely necessary. Most babies really don't need them.
