What med are using?: Since you mention 160mg, I am assuming you are asking for a dose of acetominophen (ie tylenol) for your child. For a 19# child, the correct dose would be 80mg every four hours. So if the medicine you have is 160mg per teaspoon, the correct amount to get 80mg would be a half teaspoon. Always know the concentration of medicine you give a child and use that to give correct mg dose.

Try this first: A cold washcloth or chilled teething ring may be soothing as well. Avoid frozen teething rings as the extreme cold may hurt. Pain medication should be the last resort. Not knowing your child's medical history, i would suggest you speak to your son's pediatrician regarding medication and dosage. I would first have your son seen by a pedodontist, especially if he has never had an exam.

Careful !!!: Acetaminophen is a great medication as long as it is used as directed. Never give more than 4 doses in a day. At 19 pounds he can have Acetaminophen 4 times per day at 120 mg. The concentration of Acetaminophen has changed. Check your package . Many times Ibuprofen is more effective. The dose for Ibuprofen should be three fourths teaspoon (100mg/tsp) or 75 mg also at four times per day.

Several options: All the previous answers have good thoughts. The acetominophen dose can safely range from 80-120 mgms per dose.Using the cold washcloth may eliminate the need of medication at all.The Ibuprofen dose may help also.Needing to see a pediatric dentist 1st before doing anything, i think is unnecessary.
