Does a full blood count test identify sickle cell disease, or do you have to have a specific blood test to be diagnosed?

Classic sickle cell disease is not subtle, but there are variant hemoglobins related to the classic disease that are more subtle, and may be missed until adulthood. Gene testing's best for these.
