A member asked:

Does a full blood count test identify sickle cell disease, or do you have to have a specific blood test to be diagnosed?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Why do you ask?: If the smear is viewed and reported, and the physician reads the full report, you'll be told whether you have sickle cell disease. The trait requires some special testing. Classic sickle cell disease is not subtle, but there are variant hemoglobins related to the classic disease that are more subtle, and may be missed until adulthood. Gene testing's best for these. Best wishes.
