In general: swelling or edema--which is the term used for excess fluid trapped in your body's tissues--is caused when your tiny blood capillaries leak fluid. It can result from injury, infection, remaining in one position too long, side effect of medications, etc. I would suspect a tooth or gum problem. If there is no fever/pain/redness, you can watch a couple more days. If persists/other symptoms seek eval.
