Dr. Julie Abbott
45 years experience female
Retired from Mayo Clinic
200 1st St SW, Rochester, MNDirections
I come from a family of doctors, and even though I did what was expected and went into the family business ... medicine .... I'm very glad I did. My father was a brain surgeon, my grandfather and uncle were general practitioners, and my older brother is a radiologist. I trained at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota specializing in Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine. I went on to work there for nearly 32 years in our Executive Health Program, in Mayo Employee Health, as the Medical Directors of Patient and Health Education as well as the Olmsted County (MN) Public Health Department. In my later years I served as the founding (and only) medical editor of Mayo's health newsletter for women. But my real claim to fame was becoming a mother for the first time at age 50! It's been a ride!

A 29-year-old female asked:
It is normal: to bleed after treatment for ectopic pregnancy. The thickened uterine lining is shed..often it is not similar to "menstrual-like" bleeding as it may be clotty and dark; for other it appears similar to a period. Bleeding and spotting may last up to 6 weeks. Pain should steadily improve. Normal periods restart 2 to 10 weeks after treatment. Ovulation may occur before a period; consider contraception
A 32-year-old female asked:
It sounds the most: like allergies/allergic rhinitis. Often the offending allergen is not identified but dust, pollens, animal danders are common triggers. Or it could be a viral upper respiratory infection/"cold." I would begin with nasal saline irrigations (salt water squirted into your nasal passages to clear them), over-the-counter antihistamine such as loratadine; then fluticasone nasal spray if needed.
A 34-year-old female asked:
Women who experience: recurrent UTIs often are reinfected with the same/similar organisms. One important question is whether the antibiotic which was ineffective was prescribed after a urine culture with antibiotic sensitivities was performed to identify which antibiotic(s) SHOULD BE effective. If not, no future antibiotics should be prescribed for future UTIs unless this testing is done identifying an effective drug.

Dr. Abbott is inspiring, as one day I want to become a doctor. She is not afraid to use vocabulary appropriately to give knowledge to a person.
