Aircast splint: or "lace up" ankle supports give the best support for your ankle. These can usually be purchased over the counter (without a prescription) at your local pharmacy/drugstore. Most athletic stores also carry these. Also don't forget "RICE" Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation of your ankle! This will help reduce the swelling. (and avoid aspirin or applying heat the first 72 hrs).

Walk on it: As for support the simple answer what ever makes it feel better. Compression dressings, commercial splints or even tubi grip. The more you can walk on it the quicker and stronger it will heal. Anti-inflammatory will help with the swelling and will ice. During the first 48 hours elevation when not walking on it will help the swelling.

To err is chancy.: Your description of "quite swollen" can mean different things to different people. To me it means you need to apply even compression that can be easily adjusted for swelling when necessary. This can be achieved with the use of a pneumatic cast boot. Without knowing the extent of the injury, I would err on the side of being over cautious until proven otherwise. Consider having it evaluated.
