Trazodone doesn't: usually act this way. It typically takes longer to act, and puts people out longer, with a longer hang over the next morning than Elavil (amitriptyline) or other sleep aids. Elavil (amitriptyline) is another antidepressant in this class, but has a bad reputation for side effects, mostly weight gain (not so for Trazodone). Check with your MD for dosages and also for alternative sleepers...

Medication should be managed by your Psychiatrist. It's a good idea to have a complete physical exam to know if you have a physical illness that is causing symptoms, e.g. sleep apnea. You may need a sleep study. You could be helped by a Clinical Psychologist with expertise in multiple types of psychotherapy. If you are not confident with your Psychiatrist please see another for a second opinion.
