Yes: Swelling from gouty attacks can persist for weeks ( depending on the joint or tendon involved ) but the pain can usually be overcome fairly quickly w/ gout medications( NSAIDs , colchicine , steroid dose pack)...if the swelling is not improved in the next couple of weeks ( esp.if in upper extremity) , see your physician . I got the Gouch.: As long as there is uric acid on the scene, expect your body to react to it. The swelling will persist for some time. Controlling your uric acid level is crucial to long term control of the symptoms of gout. Following a low purine diet is not easy as every person with gout will tell you. The diet and medication is your only real chance of controlling gout.
