Sore Throats: These two diagnoses are almost synonymous. It is an infection in the back of your throat. You cannot stop it from occurring again at another time with another environmental exposure. The best thing to do is to take your medicine for it till it is all gone.

Sure: Yes, since tonsils are located in your pharynx, it is common for both to be infected at the same time. If it is caused by an infection, you will be contagious. Some causes are more contagious than others. As for stopping it form happening again, that is more difficult. Make sure you use good oral hygiene, don't share eating utensils (silverware, cups, bottles) with others and keep away from sick.
