Close: Not exactly an abscess is a collection of pus. A gum fistula is a draining sinus.

Linked: The fistula results from the abscess. The infection seeks a way out of the bone/tissue and ends up destroying one or both in forming a channel to the outside of the gum. Once it penetrates through, you get drainage from the hole and usually immediate lessening of the pain. However this may close and reopen over time thus forming a chronic abscess, with accompanying bone destruction. Get seen.

Gum fistula: is a sign that there is chronic painless infection and your body is draining it out. Unlike some other types of infection, a chronic gum abscess will not get better on its own. See your dentist for definitive diagnosis and treatment. Good luck.
