Diet/exercise & meds: Hemoglobin A1c can be reduced through good control of one's blood sugar for at least 3 months. This is accomplished by a low sugar, low simple carbohydrate, high complex carbohydrate diet; regular cardiovascular and light weight training exercises, and medications if recommended by your physician.

Good choices: Eat right (small portions, whole grains, lots of fruits and veggies). Get moving 30-60 minutes every day. Maybe take medications. Congrats on wanting to make good changes. Good for you!

It Depends: The A1c is essentially a way to measure your average blood sugar (as if you are taking it all the time) for the past 2-3 mths. There are ways to convert it to a sugar estimate which may be better to understand. If the A1c is in the nl or high nl range, it is mostly about lifestyle with exercise & a diet low in simple carbs. Based on Fam & risks maybe meds. If high or shows DM same & prob meds.

Diabetes control: If you have diabetes, the best ways to lower your A1C are to adhere to your diet ( avoid simple sugars), keep your weight in normal range, enjoy regular exercise and take prescribed medication as directed by your doctor.

Get A1C lower.: You can lower your A1C by keeping your blood sugar under good control via proper diet, regular exercise and medications when needed. If your finger sticks can remain in the 90-135 range in the long term, your A1C should drift down quite nicely.
