X-ray children: As with any x-ray there is always a small dose of radiation (very small exposure). You always have to weight risks/benefits. Given your son is having difficulties with chewing the throwing up refractory to conservative treatment, an x-ray sounds like a necessary next step to make sure these doctors know more about whats going on.
