Surgical repair: This depends on your definition of "best". If the hernia is bothersome, limiting your activities, or enlarging, usually the best thing to do is repair it with an operation. Mesh repair is often used, and has slightly lower failure rates, with theoretically slightly increased risk of problems with the mesh. There are mesh products referred to as "ventral patches", and used by general surgeons.

The best solution: for symptomatic umbilical hernia is surgical repair. If this is not possible because of medical contraindications or personal preference, consult with a prosthetic specialist for properly fitted abdominal support. But realize that this is not the best solution and a temporary one at that.
