Umbilical Hernia: If it is small reducible and does not impede functionality, should not keep you from passing a physical exam. a large non reducible hernia should be referred to a general surgeon for repair. (Reducible- Able to be pushed in)

Maybe: If you do heavy physical activity or have a job that can be impacted by a hernia, then you won't be able to continue until it is fixed.

How big?: Many small hernias are stable and never change. Does the lump change in size? Does it disappear when you sleep overnight and recur throughout the day? Does it stick out when you cough or sneeze? Does it fell like it is deep in the abdomen or limited to the skin? Is it less than an inch in size or like a fist? See an md to examine you. They may be able to provide a note for your employer

Hernias: Most common hernias are groin (inguinal) hernias in men. Ventral and epigastric hernias above the umbilical area are less common. Hernias can also occur at old surgical scars from past surgery.

Pain & swelling: Discomfort with swelling or bulge at the umbilical region. May not be able to see a hernia bulge if it is small. See a doctor for an examination.
