Narcotics: have important indications. With abdominal pain, we don't prescribe antibiotics until we have a diagnosis for important reasons. We don't want to miss something that could get worse and make you very ill, and we don't want you to get addicted to narcotics for functional GI disease when it responds equally well to non-narcotic medications.
