My brother was prescribe cephalexin because of a cut that required stitches. is it safe for him? he suffers from uc and had a total proctocolectomy with ileostomy surgery. would it cause any adverse effects on gi track and small intestine?

Discuss with your GI specialist whether a probiotic with the course of antibiotics is advisable. In general, the probiotic promotes gut health. Antibiotics change the gut flora and are associated potentially with GI upset.

Your brother should always tell any treating doc of his condition. Conversely all docs should know the patients med. history before prescribing. A short 2-3 day course should not harm him. Also not every cut requires an antibiotic coverage, Only in unclean situations and in people with lowered immunity. Hope your brother does well.
