Swelling: An infection of the tooth can lead to swelling and in some instances this can become very serious if not treated and allowed to spread. If the tooth is infected and there is no portal for which the infection can exit (as in a large hole in the tooth or an abcess) then swelling occurs. Antibiotics are required to reduce the swelling and to allow the dentist to either extract or root canal treat.
