A member asked:

What do they normally do if you show up at an emergency room with a gum or tooth infection? do they have dentists there?

DEPENDS: Some hospitals are teaching hospitals and have dental residents on call. If that is the case you may be treated by the resident in the dental clinic. If not, an emergency room physcian may just rx an antibiotic and pain medication till you see your dentist.

Treat the emergency: Some hospitals have dentists on staff, and some do not. In any case, in an emergency room, they will only treat the emergency, that is pain and/or swelling, most often with prescription medication, and tell you to see a dentist for definitive treatment.
