Not common...: alginate (a sea weed extract) is used in many foods from ice cream to salad dressings. I would be surprised if you had a true allergy to alginate but it is possible. I would be suspicious of possible reaction to other ingredients such as flavorings. What type of reaction did you experience?

Contact stomatitis: Some new study suggests that alginate denture impression material may evoke type IV allergic reactions. The number of such allergic reactions is very low. Good luck.
