Tissue is the issue: Hi. Diagnosis of what the renal mass is requires tissue for the pathologist to examine. Imaging studies may be suggestive or not, but to be certain, a pathologist must study a CT- or U/S-guided core biopsy of the mass. Sometimes surgical biopsy is necessary to determine whether benign or malignant. We don't have the means to make that determination. The mass may not be suspicious enough to biopsy
