Diet: Be aware of foods that may get lodged between the gums and your teeth. Popcorn is notorius for doing this. The end result is normally an abscess.

Periodontal abcess: Most periodontal abcesses are the result of advanced untreated periodontal disease. If you have undergone periodontal surgery and therapy, with regular periodontal maintenance visits, you should no longer have any periodontal abcesses. You should, however, voice your concerns and discuss this with your periodontist.

Sounds good: All that we can ask of a patient is to do their best. A gum abscess can occur from a gum/bone problem or a nerve damage problem. I don't know if you meant dieting or a good diet. In either case a good healthy lifestyle with your quarterly visits should help to minimize risks. Keep up the good work!

Recurrence unlikely: There is no way to ensure that you never have a gum abscess although if you brush and floss properly and often enough, eat healthy foods that do not promote tooth decay and periodontal disease, and see your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups, the chance is minimal. Food can sometimes get stuck under the gums and slowly it festers and the bacteria flourish causing an abscess.

Occlusion: Make sure that your bite (occlusion) is well balanced and stable. Other than that, be sure the fillings and crown margins are all well sealed and contoured. Sounds as if you have it under control. Good luck.

Dental abscess: http://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/hygiene/disease/dental_caries.html http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/tooth-abscess/manage/ptc-20185988 Avoid sugary foods, if you have diabetes , good control is important . You might consider gargling after meals with salt water as well as brushing as that eliminates bacteria. Seek dental attention the minute you start noting something is off.

Hygiene: I suggest the following: flossing. Water-Pik, gentle electronic toothbrushing and antibacterial mouth wash are other options; however, I suggest consulting a board certified dentist.
