Is having good oral hygiene the best way to treat gum disease?

It helps: Having good oral hygiene is essential to help treat and control gum disease. If gum disease is a class of periodontitis then maintenance visits every 3 months or so is also essential. People with severe periodontal disease can also benefit from gum surgery with or without laser therapy as well. Good oral hygiene is actually the best way to prevent gum disease.

After Treatment ...: First see a periodontists or dentists and treat with a scaling & root planing procedure. If this first step fails to inactivate the periodontal disease, additional treatment repeating the scaling & root planing & adding laser treatment may be used. A surgical procedure may be needed if treatments do not inactivate it. After inactive hygiene & quarterly periodontal maintenance cleanings are a must.

Only one way of..: Good oral hygiene is one of the best ways to prevent gum disease and maintain a healthy mouth following treatment. However, having routine check-ups and cleanings are also essential as even dentists miss cleaning a spot here or there over time and need professional cleanings by a dentist or dental hygienist. Good nutrition & medical check-ups are also important to maintain overall general health.

That helps..but: Oral hygiene is critically important to prevent gum disease. However, sometimes you need professional help to help regenerate bone that has been lost and to get the periodontal tissues in better condition. The use of the lanap protocol is a possible option in addition to more traditional forms of treatment, if needed. I would suggest that an experienced laser-trained periodontist evaluate you.
