Why: Take only if you need to for the control of an infection or as determined by the american heart association. If you do not need them - then do not take them.

Ask your dentist: For guidance on whether or not you need to take antibiotics prior to dental treatment, ask your dentist. There are a few medical conditions that do require coverage, but only for specific dental procedures. You should not take antibiotics for any reason unless you are directed to by your doctor or dentist.

Why: Sometimes antibiotics are indicated prior to a dental visit. Your dentist should be the one who prescribes it. This should not be a "do-it-yourself" type of thing.

Yes, but unnecessary: It is ok to take antibiotics before a dental appointment if you are instructed to do so, have a history of heart infection, or have had recent heart surgery or joint replacement. Your dentist and/or surgeon should advise you. To take antibiotics in the hope of preventing any possible infection is not a good idea, as it actually makes you more susceptible to more severe infections later.
