A test : Your age arouses concern for mononucleosis, which can be easily detected by a blood test. If you have large swollen lymph nodes in the front of your neck these are another sign of "mono". If you have difficulty swallowing your own spit it is time to be urgently evaluated for an abscess in the throat, which will require more than just augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate).

Try herbs: Throat pain can be severe & may not respond well to pain meds. I advise herbal lozenges like ricola & slippery elm. Propolis is a natural antimicrobial & helps pain. I hope Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) helps but research shows it does little more than placebo for sinusitis. However, pelargonium sidoides, a herb sold in health food & drug stores as umcka, is proven to help sinusitis/sore throats & ok with augmentin!

Anesthetic spray: Cepacol anesthetic spray to the back of the throat can help with pharyngitis symptoms. Its over the counter and use as directed.

Try some: Chloraseptic spray or even gargle with warm salt water for relief. It should start improving soon but a nasal steroid, at night, turns post nasal drip into antiinflammatory. Generic Flonase is good if u have recurrent allergies and can prevent a lot of problems, good luck.

Soothe it: You certainly have pharyngitis as well. If the antibiotic doesn't help in 2-3 days the problem may not be bacterial and augmentum wont help. Drink only warm drinks. Try 1 t of dried thyme leaves in a cup of boiled water with 1 t of honey and 1 t of coconut milk . If you are coughing the cough could be irritating. Avoid coffee which can cause a reflux of stomach acid ( laryngopharyngeal reflux).
