Polysomnogram.: If you have recurrent sleep problems, the only way to accurately determine the cause would be through a sleep study (poly somnogram).

Sleep: There may be an underlying component of anxiousness that is affecting sleep onset and preventing you from relaxing into deeper sleep. If it's a jolting sensation, these may be hypnic jerks. A sleep study and visit to a sleep specialist can help.
