Is it normal for the doctor to order an mri if the results of a pelvic ultrasound show a mass that she cannot tell is attached to the ovary or not?

Yes: Mri is a great tool for following up findings on an ultrasound of the pelvis. An MRI can often better discriminate individual organs and anatomy.

Yes: The MRI has a higher resolution and should be able to confirm that first there is a mass present. Secondly, it should tell if it appears to be a mass originating from the ovary, the structures between the ovary and the uterus, the uterus, or structures next to the uterus and ovaries. This helps the physician (along with the signal characteristics on the mri) determine what the mass most likely is.
