Apthous Ulcers: Perhaps because what patients refer to as canker sores are not always what is helped with lysine and the sore needs to be seen by a professional first to recommend treatment. L-lysine can help some people with apthous ulcers - white lesions on non-bounded tissue often between cheek & gum and associated with stress. There are other treatments as well. Sores last 10-14 days with or without treating.

No Cure Available: If you have canker sores, there really isn't a "cure" available. All treatments aim at reducing healing time or reducing pain. Some practitioners like lysine, others place an acidic fluid to seal the surface, and some use a laser. They all work pretty well at relieving pain, but they don't really heal the lesions or protect you from recurrence. Have them re-examined if it's been since 1994.

Different lesion: I researched the article. From what i saw, the study was referring to "cold sores" which are caused by a virus. You mentioned "canker sores" also known as aphthous ulcers whose cause is unknown and thought to be related to stress and local trauma.

Canker sores: Canker sores are the most common recurrent oral lesions. Individual ulcers typically last 1-2 weeks. The condition is idiopathic (cause is not known) recurrent aphthous ulcers is usually self-limiting and no treatment is required.. If concerned see your dentist after 10 days.
