Should be safe: If you have tolerated both when taken without the other.

Combination: I agree with dr. Dugan. Many people who do have sufficient improvement with one these alone, use them together. But, always speak with your prescribing physician before starting a new herbal/ supplement.

A 67-year-old female asked:

Is it better to take Ambien (zolpidem) or melatonin?

Sleep issues.: See you are already on Ativan at night & am for anxiety. Ambien (zolpidem) is a sleep medication that is designed for short term use. However, many people end up taking it chronically. You can become addicted to it. Different doctors may have differing thoughts on this but i would try melatonin first. If can be effective without the addiction potential. However, it is really important that you are using.

good sleep hygiene. Retire & rise same time each day. Keep bedroom dark & cool & use only for sex & sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. No caffeine for 6 hrs & no alcohol or tobacco w/i 2 hrs of sleep. Keep dinner moderate sized & finish at least 2 to 3 hrs before sleep. Can try warm milk, Chamomile tea or melatonin along w light reading, warm bath or lavender scent.

A 63-year-old female asked:

Is melatonin safer to take than zolpidem for insomnia and what dosage to take ?

1 mg or less : Higher doses of melatonin can actually interfere with normal sleep. Take 0.3 to 1 mg. And see how you do. Both are generally safe, but melatonin usually has less potential for morning "hang over".
