You could, but why?: You probably could, but why would you want to? Taken occasionally, zolpidem is a good medicine for help with falling asleep (but not staying asleep). Melatonin has minimal effects on sleep (it does help change the circadian rhythm). For long-term use, medicines like zolpidem are not that great an idea. If the cause cannot be found, medicines like trazodone or Doxepin might be better.

Sleep meds: I would only do so if your doctor has recommended it. If either of the medications are working well as a solo medication, then there isn't necessarily an indication.
